Is it your dream to hang in museums alongside the old masters? Have your own solo exhibition in a chic upscale gallery? Travel the world painting as your go? Earning a comfortable living doing what you love to do or just painting in your spare time?
There are thousands of artists all vying for fame and fortune. While this book will not make you famous, it will help you look like you are famous. Or least like you know what you are doing. It is written from personal experience and lessons learned along the way. There will be some repetition (although I did try to put everything in its right place) but so many areas overlap and influence each other that at times it is unavoidable. This book will help you to find a gallery and develop a long-term, profitable relationship and it will help you work your way up to solo exhibition at a chic gallery.

It will certainly give you some guidance on where to start. Until you get some experience in dealing with galleries and the public, it’s important to protect yourself. There are unscrupulous galleries out there that don’t pay at all let alone on time. Carrying yourself with self-confidence and assurance and arming yourself with knowledge gives the message that you can’t be fooled.
There a many more facets of making a living as an artist than just painting pretty pictures. The first step is to say “I am an artist” when asked what you do. Look at your creativity as a career where with some hard work you can earn a decent living. As with any new business set up there is paper work involved and this is where we start. It will get easier as you move along and get established. Then you can paint!

What people are saying about the book!
Beyond the Easel is rich in detailed information, helpful guidance and research. This book is perfect for any emerging or for that matter, established artist to take their art to a different level. Sheila's enthusiasm, dedication and professionalism are evident on every page. If all artists were as prepared and organized as Sheila Davis, our jobs as gallery owners and gallerists would be a dream.
Mark Hunter/Megan Less - Canvas Gallery Toronto
Beyond The Easel
The art world is incredibly competitive and most artists not only neglect their own marketing but may in fact hinder their own development as a professional artist. Sheila Davis's new book Beyond The Easel has opened my eyes in a way i had not expected. Her insightful tips and helpful 'must do's are imperative to an artist's success both commercially and personally. Her book has become my new bible and 'go to' manual,,, with it in hand i know i am in charge of my own destiny.
Diane Daigle
Sheila Davis’ “professional manual for artists” is a comprehensive guide offering a wealth of information for emerging and established artists alike. Drawing on her own personal experience, Sheila outlines the challenges artists face and clearly articulates a path to overcome and succeed. As a gallery owner I would encourage all emerging artist to read this practical handbook.
Susan Hoeltken – In2art Gallery Oakville
