How is mentoring different than a workshop or course?

A workshop or course follows an outline with elements done in a specific order. One element must be completed before the next element can start. Mentoring is more personal, we chat about what level you're at with your work, where you want to go and how I can help you get there. While my group will primarily focus on setting up your professional profile, that is getting your paperwork, bio, artist statement and CV in order. We will also tackle things like  materials, technique, subject standing out in a sea of artists, inspiration and finding your voice.
I can't make you a better artist (only painting often can do that), but I can use my experiences to make your journey smoother,  soften some of the bumps along the way and teach you a trick or two.

I've laid out sessions in a way that I hope will flow and makes sense.
Of course as a Master Mentor I am here to help you grow and we will tackle what ever you want

Session #1
  • Let’s introduce ourselves! I'll chat a bit about how I got started painting and how I transitioned from a 'real' job into painting full time.
  • What are your goals as an artist
  • What are you hoping to get from this mentoring?
  • We’ll chat about ways to make a living as an artist and what it entails.  Professional practices and setting a brand. Getting your house in order. So that when you are ready to move forward, the work is done and you can grasp any opportunity that arises.
  • We'll talk about issues you are currently facing and make plans to move forward and put these behind you. Starting with your mindset and setting priorities for studio time as well as 'office' time.
  • Tell me about your art. What did you do before painting? How does it influence your work? What is your personality? Highly detailed and organized or spontaneous and playful.
  • What medium do you work in? Why?  We'll chat about your 'subject' what you want to paint and why?  What is it you want the viewer to see?
Homework will be assigned for the next session
Session #2
Review of previous sessions homework
  • We will review your homework images to determine what you see in each and what you want to view to see. Was this achieved in your sample work? What do you like about the other artist work?
  • Composition will be discussed
  • Medium - why and how will it be used, benefits and drawbacks of each
  • Surface? Size? Framing? Does it matter?
  •  Composition rules and breaking them for impact.
  • How image will dictate the size and orientation.
  • Avoiding composition pitfalls - mirror image. Linear lines, leading lines.
  • Surface tension- different layers of paint and how they play off each other
  • What makes a piece of art desirable?  What draws the viewer in makes us look longer?
  • Preparing your image to paint -Improving on mother nature with sketching or photoshop. Colour, light value and composition. Quick  Photoshop Elements demo
Homework will be assigned
Session #3
Review of previous sessions homework
  • We will review your thought process and your artist statement for connectivity and clarity.
  •  Your CV. Why is it needed? How is it laid out?  What goes on it? How to ‘pad’ you CV until you no longer need to.
  • The importance of being organized and knowing where your work is always.  Different ways to track your work, customers, galleries etc.
  • Keeping in touch - Mailing lists and newsletters
  • Websites – domains – servers – pages - elements - mail etc.
Homework will be assigned

  • How to find the perfect gallery for your work. Do you even want to work with a gallery? Do they want to work with you?
