Day 1 please arrive a minimun of a half hour to set up prior to workshop
We will start with a brief talk about subject - muse and inspiration and how to see it and bring that forward in your work. the definition of good composition, value , colour and line. I will explain the palette I use and why. the surface I use and why and the best setup for painting.
I will paint in stages allowing the class working time between. I will start by demonstrating my value sketch ( on the surface), then we will block in the colour and begin working up the subject.
Day 2 will be finessing values, colour and details. Adding those little marks that make a painting sing. I will talk about varnishing, storing and presenting your work. If time allows we will do a class critique and/or have a discussion on promotion and social media.

Beginner to intermediate painters should work from my image. I will provide colour prints on request.

I work and teach in oil with odourless mineral Spirits. You will NOT get the same affects as myself working on CANVAS or with acrylic. But I will help you along. Acrylic are best used with an extender such as Air Brush medium. I recommend working in Acrylic on Canvas.
I will paint a 36 X 36 Size. We will be working on a minimum size of 24 X 24 - you must get your work home :)
if you are a slower painted or a novice please bring a 30 x 30. you may not have time to cover a 36 X 36.

Odorless mineral spirits and container with lid (stainless brush tin or shallow glass jar)– Gamsol or Opus Odorless Mineral Spirits.
Regular mineral spirits and turpentine are NOT PERMITTED. Please be aware that older painting boxes and mediums can have strong odor and are not permitted.. *** many older mediums and thinners contain toxic ingredients. These are NOT PERMITTED in class only odorless mineral spirits allowed. NO TURPINOID
2 water tubs for acrylics
Palette – a board is fine. I will have palette paper and tape. Clips to hold the paper. You will need a large mixing area min 12 X 16” you will be changing or cleaning your palette often.
Easel – floor is best (you will need table room) and 2 Drop sheets to protect the table and floor. You are responsible for keeping your area clean – NO PAINT ON THE FLOOR! Please be aware of your easels footprint – long splayed out legs are a danger and take up room, make sure its sturdy and will hold your surface vertical
Paper towels – one large roll at least
A good rubber glove for you cleaning hand. Vinyl is fine for your painting hand
*raw wood to be prepared with two coats of clear liquitex gesso sanded. Finished edges how you wish. Prepare min 2 days ahead.
Colour Shaper – little rubber thing that moves paint around – a nice tool to have. my fave is royal sovereign firm angel chisel size 16 from above ground art
Oil Sticks - any colour you like! I prefer Kama or Shiva brand. Others brands can be too soft.
Oil paint – KAMA OR GAMBLIN
Paint - my personal preferences after 25 years of painting. No tube greens or black allowed ☺
If you don’t like a colour don’t buy it!
Many colours have the same name and are the same… some aren’t. It’s a learning curve getting to know each brand
Colours in BOLD are large 150 ml tubes.
If purchasing other brands compare colours! Different brands have different colour and names. Colour charts are on the web. I don’t know them so can’t really help. I can help you mix what you have

Kama Oil sticks – Kama oil sticks are a hard stick of strong pigment used for calligraphy and scribbles. Other brands are soft and mushy. Pick a few to play with! My fav are Cyan, Cad orange light, Turquoise Cobalt Light, Azur blue. Cinnabar Green, Fluorescent Pink BUY WHAT YOU LIKE
